RESEARCH PROJECTS
Our Current Focus
CAPTURE OF NITRIC OXIDE USING FRUSTRATED LEWIS PAIR
Swar Dakein is designing Frustrated Lewis Pairs that can capture nitric oxide. He has synthesized and designed at least three systems, one of which is capable to reversibly capture nitric oxide. In this research project students are trained in high-level synthesis, crystallography and spectroscopy.
COPPER VERSUS NICKEL
Brandon and Kampbell are synthesizing coordination compounds using the same ligand systems, but different metal center. Brandon is working with nickel while Kampbell's bet is on copper. The contest between the two metal centers focus on capturing nitric oxide as well as on the chemistry of metal nitrosyl. Students in this research area will be trained on advanced UV-Vis spectroscopy, crystallography and advanced NMR techniques.
SYNTHESIS OF NITRO AND NITROSOBENZENE
Sadie Olrogg is designing and optimizing new protocols in synthesizing nitroso and nitrobenzene which are more energy efficient and more environmentally friendly. Students in this research are trained in chemical separation, chemical analysis, GC-MS, infrared spectroscopy and quantitative NMR.
